I will have easy one piece patterns available in all sizes available for your use. Inexpensive sew on stiff interfacing, freezer paper, tracing paper, muslin, or any solid color fabric that is 36 inches wide to trace the pattern for your use. The cheap sew in interfacing in the bags sold at Joann’s and Hancock’s work great for this. Pencil, pen or Sharpie fine point-your choice of ink colors to trace pattern.
Batiks work the best, since they do not fray because they are tightly woven.
If you are bust size 32 inches to 36 inches 1 yard muslin for inner lining plus 1 yard lining fabric either cotton or polyester fabric.
If you are bust size 38 inches to 44 inches 1 ˝ yard muslin for inner lining plus 1 ˝ yard fabric for lining either cotton or polyester fabric.
If you are bust size 46 and larger 1 5/8 yard muslin for inner lining plus 1 5/8 yard fabric for lining either cotton or polyester fabric.
Wash dry and iron the muslin, do not wash polyester lining fabric. If you are using cotton for the lining wash and dry it.
An assortment of fat quarters, fat eights, scraps in a harmonious color grouping for the vest front and back will be used for the vest. If you are unsure of a color combination, look in your closet and choice colors that are similar to those colors. Remember to throw in one zinger fabric (one that is lighter, darker, than your chosen fabrics; a larger, smaller print, geometric —one that is a complementary color, black and whites are always a good zinger). How much fabric? Enough to cover approximately 2 yards of muslin; this will give you a variety to choose from. The fabric will be cut into smaller pieces and strips, so scraps are fine. Don’t worry about washing any of this fabric. Charm squares are always good for this project.
Thread to contrast. This is a great project for variegated threads for machine stitching the collage to the muslin and lining. Or use many different threads to sew the vest.
Basic Sewing supplies: pins, seam ripper, scissors, machine needles, hand sewing needles, (rotary cutter and board can be helpful, but not necessary), etc.
Pencil, paper
Sewing machine in good working order with a new needle, foot for zigzag(nice to add some texture to the vest, but not necessary), and straight stitching foot, machine manual, extension cord, extra needles, tool to replace needles. Featherweight machine may be used for this project.
Iron and iron surface, if they are not supplied to the classrooms.
