Free Motion Embroidery

˝ yard  of quilting cotton solid or fabric that reads solid or good quality muslin.

Fat quarter of fabric for mounting thread painted butterfly, can be purchased later.  Fat quarter for border and binding.

20x 20 quilt batting and backing, thread for quilting, probably will not need this until later.

20x 20 stabilizer—enough for 2 layers of interfacing (non woven), or muslin  I will supply the stabilizer for $1, if you wish

 

Pigma pen, in black or brown.  A light box if you own one.

A hand towel in a light color to press the embroidery piece when the hoop is removed.

 

8 different colors of thread, at least—cotton, or embroidery thread; variegated adds interesting texture.  Bring threads you have and we will experiment.  If you have lots of polyester thread, also bring that, plus any other thread you have.  If you have metallic thread—bring that, too.

 

Bobbin thread, or maxilock serger thread in white and black to be used in the bobbin.  Invisible thread is a little difficult to use when first learning this technique. 

 

Sewing machine in good working order with the ability to lower the feed dogs.   Embroidery machine needles, bring several—breakage is to be expected when learning this technique.  A screw driver to remove the needle, darning foot.  Remember the manual, foot pedal, power cord.

 

Basic sewing supplies: scissors, seam ripper, hand needles, pins, marking pencil, ruler, thimble, thread clips.

 

Wooden embroidery hoop with a screw to tighten the hoop.
